Soloveitchik","searchURL":"https:\/\/www.yutorah.org\/search\/?teacher=80186","teacherBio":"Rabbi Soloveitchik was born in Pruzhan, Poland, the son of Rabbi Moshe Soloveitchik zt’l, and grandson of Rabbi Chaim HaLevi zt’l. At the time, Rabbi Moshe was living with his father-in-law, Rabbi Eliyahu Feinstein zt’I, rabbi of Pruzhan and author of Teshuvot Halichot Eliyahu. Rabbi Yosef Dov studied with his father, whom he considered to be his foremost teacher, until the age of 23. In the final year of Rabbi Chaim’s life, he moved to Warsaw where his son, Rabbi Moshe, was living at the time. During that year, Rabbi Yosef Dov studied together with his vaunted grandfather. Several years later he began university studies in Berlin while continuing his immersion in Torah. In Berlin, he met Rabbi Chaim Heller zt’l, with whom he developed a close and lasting relationship. He also encountered Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson zt’l who was later appointed the rebbe of Chabad.\r\n\r\nDuring this period, Rabbi Yosef Dov made frequent visits to the city of Vilna where he became a favorite of Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski and other leading Lithuanian gaonim. In 1932, he moved to America and settled in Boston. He founded Yeshivat Rambam—the Maimonides School—and delivered weekly shiurim there for many years. In 1941, he succeeded his father, upon the latter’s passing, as rosh yeshiva at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, commuting from Boston to New York each week. His shiurim in halakhah and aggadah, which reached to the ends of the Jewish world, made a profound impact on Torah learning in our times. They continued for decades until he was compelled to stop due to an illness which overtook him several years before his demise. In addition to the shiurim which he delivered at the yeshiva and in Boston, he delivered a shiur every Tuesday evening at the Moriah Synagogue in Manhattan to overflow audiences.\r\n\r\nRabbi Yosef Dov served as the Honorary President of the Agudath HaRabbonim of America, and became the rebbe and chief mentor of the Rabbinic Council of America (RCA), as well as the chief intellectual and spiritual force of Mizrachi, at whose gatherings he delivered lectures several times every year.\r\n\r\nAfter the passing of his wife z’l in 1967, he began giving additional shiurim during the summer months in Boston to his students and to the RCA.\r\n\r\nRabbi Yosef Dov was the most influential figure associated with the spread of Torah in America, and he was singularly known as “the Rav.”","teacherPhotoURL_o":"https:\/\/cdnyutorah.cachefly.net\/_images\/roshei_yeshiva\/yosef_d._soloveichik_o.jpg?rev=201805017-2000003816"}],"shiurURL":"\/1980\/1053\/767945.MP3","shiurTeacherFullName":"Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik zt\"l. Rabbi Schachter earned his B.A. from Yeshiva College, an M.A. in Hebrew Literature from the Bernard Revel Graduate School in 1967, and was ordained that same He is also the spiritual leader of Congregation Zichron Mordechai in Teaneck, New Jersey, delivering regular Shiurim and lectures both there and at the Beis Medrash of Bergen County, housed in Teaneck’s Congregation Bnai Yeshurun. His classes are well known for their breadth of sources and clarity of presentation. Rabbi Taubes has been involved in formal and informal Jewish education for over forty years, serving both in the classroom and in various administrative posts.\r\nAn alumnus of Yeshivat Har Etzion in Israel, where he was a student of Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein, zt’l, Rabbi Taubes attended Yeshiva College and was honored upon graduation in 1980 with an award for excellence in Talmud. He subsequently studied in the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, where he learned for several years in the Shiur of the revered Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, zt’l, and from where he received his ordination. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Jewish Education from Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School and then spent several years learning in Yeshiva’s Marcos and Adinah Katz Kollel, headed by Rabbi Hershel Schachter, shlita, with whom he continues to maintain a close relationship.\r\nRecognizing the need to spread Torah to people outside the sphere of influence of the yeshiva classroom and the Beis Medrash, Rabbi Taubes worked for a number of years with NCSY and later helped found The Jewish Learning Experience of Bergen County, a flourishing adult outreach institution. Rabbi Taubes is the author of “The Practical Torah,” a collection of articles on topics in Halachah based on the weekly Parshah, as well as numerous essays on an array of Torah subjects appearing in a variety of Jewish publications. He also worked for ArtScroll\/Mesorah Publications as a writer and editor for the English translation of the Talmud Yerushalmi, co-edited High Holiday Machzorim and a Siddur featuring the insights of Rabbi Joseph B. His grandfather, Rabbi Menachem Sacks, was a leader of Jewish education in Chicago for nearly six decades, and his father, Rabbi Louis L. Sacks, was rabbi of Congregation Anshe Emunah in Delray Beach, FL. Rabbi Sacks currently serves as the Rosh HaYeshiva of Beis Medrash L’Talmud at Lander College for Men. Rabbi Sacks has also been the Rav of Agudas Yisroel Bircas Yaakov in Passaic, NJ for more than 25
